Expensive Church Buildings Are Great!

What matters more—honoring Jesus in a beautiful way or keeping everything practical? In the sermon "Expensive Church Buildings Are Great!" we look at Mark 14:1–11 and see Mary pour an expensive jar of perfume over Jesus. Some people called it a waste. They argued the money should have gone to the poor. But Jesus defended her. Mary didn’t hold back her worship. She gave everything in the jar to honor Jesus. And Jesus called it “a beautiful thing.” This passage reminds us that Christians can confuse preferences with God’s commands. We may have strong opinions about church buildings, music, style, or presentation, but those are not the main thing. The mission of the Church is first to honor, proclaim, and elevate Jesus Christ. That does not mean helping the poor is unimportant. The Bible clearly tells us to care for people in need. But Jesus makes it clear that worshiping Him must stay central. This message challenges us to think carefully about our criticisms. Are we focused on real issues like truth, integrity, and accountability—or just our personal preferences? Is Jesus truly at the center of what matters most to you?
